Summary

  • DePINs use blockchain and token incentives to build and maintain real-world infrastructure.
  • The following projects exemplify how blockchain enables the creation of data-rich, scalable, and user-governed infrastructure for the physical world.

Introduction

Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePINs) use blockchains to build real-world infrastructure. DePINs operate via a token economy model, where community members contribute resouces (such as their time, energy, storage, or bandwith) to the network in exchange for crypto rewards. These blockchain-based networks are governed in a decentralized manner by these community members. Follow along to learn about the DePIN projects that are transforming physical Infrastructure in 2025.

GEODNET

geodnet_impression.jpegThe first exciting DePIN project on this article's list is GEODNET, which is working to create the world’s largest Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) network. For context, RTK positioning corrects for common errors in current satellite navigation systems, meaning that GEODNET is a game-changer for GPS accuracy. In fact, GEODNET has committed to provide positioning and navigation data with centimeter-level precision in real-time globally.

In practice, GEODNET uses satellite reference stations, designated "satellite miners," to collect signals from various satellite systems. Satellite miners then transmit high-precision data to locally positioned devices and robots. The DePIN's GEOD tokens incentivizes community members to purchase and install "satellite miners," which can be viewed publicly on console map, unlike many private RTK providers.

Helium

Helium is a DePIN project that is reimagining telecommunications infrastructure through a system of community-deployed hotspots. Helium's community members earn HNT, Helium's core token, for providing network coverage and transmitting real-world connectivity data. These members  can deploy low-cost Wi-Fi Hotspots or convert existing Passpoint-enabled networks to serve mobile subscribers, which can be  especially valuable in areas with high foot traffic.

Ambios

Another pioneering DePIN project, Ambios is working to build the world’s largest decentralized environmental monitoring network. Ambios operates under a hybrid model, relying on air quality data from dedicated sensors and users of its AmbiGo! web application.

Similar to GEODNET, Ambios has a native AMBIOS token which incentivizes network growth and rewards contributors, ultimately powering a sustainable data economy. Using the AMBIOS token, community members can purchase sensors and onboarding licenses.

Ambios's unique, hyperlocal dataset has massive economic and technological potential, and the DePIN is already piloting data sales with major weather and technology firms through platforms including Google Cloud, Datarade, and Synoptic.

Hivemapper

Hivemapper is a map-building DePIN project to which community members contribute real-world data in exchange for HONEY tokens. Hivemapper participants can drive with dashcams to collect imagery, report real-time road conditions such as construction or closures, or act as AI Trainers and label data points to aid the network's MAP AI. HONEY holders can use the token to access the high-quality, up-to-date global map.

Matrix

Matrix AI Network is a DePIN project which treats artificial intelligence as a decentralized, democratized resource. MANTA, Matrix’s upcoming global distributed computing platform, will pool idle GPU power, enabling efficient AI training, lowering the cost of personalized AI, and increasing AI access for non-experts.

Matrix's most recent iteration, version 2.0, introduces a system where AI is governed by blockchain consensus, allowing each AI node to make decisions collectively. Contributors to Matrix AI Network can provide data, computing power, or new technologies in exchange for MATRIX tokens, which can be used within the network, traded, or reinvested.

Conclusion

Together, these DePIN projects showcase the transformative potential of blockchain to rebuild real-world infrastructure. From enhancing GPS accuracy and expanding wireless connectivity to democratizing AI and environmental monitoring, each project redefines how physical infrastructure can be created, used, and maintained. As 2025 unfolds, it will be exciting to watch how GEODNET, Helium, Ambios, Hivemapper, and Matrix continue to grow and innovate.
