What’s Special About $EIGEN & Should You Buy It?
By Pratik Bhuyan November 1, 2024
Introduction
The recent launch of EigenLayer's token, $EIGEN, has stirred excitement and debate in the DeFi community. As a restaking protocol built on Ethereum, EigenLayer allows users to leverage their staked Ether (ETH) to secure additional applications, potentially earning more rewards. But what makes this token special, and is it worth investing in? Let’s break it down.
What is EigenLayer?
EigenLayer is a protocol that allows users to "restake" their ETH or liquid staking tokens (LSTs). In simple terms, it lets Ethereum stakers earn extra yield by securing additional services and networks. Essentially, you're putting your staked assets to more work, boosting security for third-party applications while earning rewards. Since its inception, EigenLayer has secured over $15 billion in total value locked (TVL), placing it as a promising DeFi protocol in the crypto space.
What’s the Deal with the EIGEN Token?
The EIGEN token was officially launched in May 2024, alongside a much-anticipated “stakedrop”, which is Eigen’s version of an airdrop. However, not all stakers were thrilled, as the eligibility criteria left out users of certain DeFi protocols like Pendle, who expected to participate but were told they'd need to wait for future seasons.
The total supply of EIGEN tokens is 1.67 billion, with 45% of it allocated to community initiatives. A notable 15% is reserved for future airdrops, meaning there’s still potential for more giveaways in future seasons. As of October 1, 2024, the EIGEN token is trading at approximately $3.75, with a market capitalization of around $708 million and a fully diluted valuation (FDV) of $6.3 billion.
Should You Buy $EIGEN?
If you're considering buying $EIGEN, here are some points to weigh:
Pros:
- Innovative Use Case: EigenLayer's restaking concept is a unique way to leverage Ethereum and its derivatives, potentially offering higher returns than traditional staking.
- Large TVL and Backing: With over $15 billion locked, EigenLayer has substantial support within the DeFi space, ranking just behind heavyweights like Lido and Aave. Nearly 4% of all Ether is now restaked through EigenLayer.
- Potential for Growth: With listings on major exchanges like Binance and Kraken, the token is gaining visibility. Past performance of newly listed tokens on these platforms suggests EIGEN could see a price bump if hype builds up.
Cons:
- Volatility Risks: Binance has tagged EIGEN as a seed token, meaning it is highly speculative. Cryptos listed under this tag can experience extreme price swings, especially during the early phases of trading. It's always wise to stay on the sidelines until the volatility calms down.
- Airdrop Frustrations: Some early users felt sidelined by the eligibility criteria of the stakedrop, which may indicate future community dissatisfaction if similar missteps occur.
- Regulatory Restrictions: The token has blocked users from certain regions like the U.S. and Canada from participating in its airdrops. If you’re from these regions, you’ll have to be cautious, as trying to circumvent these rules through VPNs could get you blocked.
Final Thoughts
EigenLayer’s native token offers a good opportunity for those already invested in Ethereum staking or the broader DeFi ecosystem. However, there's also the view that the project's focus on restaking might bring some risks to the Ethereum network, which could end up affecting its price and stability.
That said, if you're bullish on the growth of DeFi and confident in EigenLayer's long-term vision, $EIGEN could be worth exploring. However, as always, make sure to do your own research and consider your risk tolerance before going all in.
