Over the past few years, Solana has emerged as one of the most prominent forces in the blockchain space. With its blazing-fast speeds, low transaction costs, and developer-friendly experience, Solana is poised to drive mainstream adoption of blockchain technology.
Since launching in 2020, Solana has seen tremendous growth in nearly all aspects of its ecosystem. The number of developers building on Solana has skyrocketed, with over 1,000+ active monthly developers. A key part of Solana's growth has been through strategic partnerships, Solana has collaborated with prominent projects like Helium, Ankr, Chainlink and others to expand its capabilities and reach. Notably, Solana partnered with credit card giant Mastercard in 2022 to make it easier for people to purchase NFTs on Solana.
A Foundational Approach
The Solana Foundation has also played a vital role in cultivating developer adoption through extensive hackathons, grants, incubators, and educational programs. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $150 million to nurture projects across gaming, DeFi, NFTs, Web3 and other key areas.

This grassroots support has been critical for onboarding new innovators and bleeding-edge applications to the Solana ecosystem. Hackathons like Solana Season and Ignition allow developers to rapidly build and showcase new concepts on Solana. Through grants and incubators, promising teams receive funding and support to turn these ideas into shipping products.
Solana has seen tremendous growth and adoption as a layer 1 blockchain, but this rapid ascent has not come without growing pains. In February 2023, the entire Solana network came to a grinding halt for nearly 19 hours due to a misconfigured node. This extended outage raised concerns over Solana's reliability and technical maturity compared to more established rivals like Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain.
While startling, such an incident alone does not invalidate Solana's potential. Ethereum similarly suffered major disruptions early in its lifespan. The key is whether the Solana team can shore up the network's stability without sacrificing performance and low costs. Initiatives like the Saga phone, built by Solana, showcases the blockchain's versatility and could drive more decentralized, secure applications. By optimizing Solana for scalability, the developers may fulfill its promise as a leading layer 1 network.
The Solana blockchain has implemented several notable technical upgrades in recent months aimed at enhancing performance and stability. The most impactful change has been the transition from using UDP to QUIC as the networking protocol. QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections) is a modern transport layer network protocol that provides multiple advantages over UDP (User Datagram Protocol). By leveraging QUIC, Solana can now support decreased latency, improved security, and faster connection establishment times.

QUIC provides better congestion control and reliability compared to raw UDP. It enables Solana nodes to adjust transmission speeds based on real-time network conditions. With QUIC, the risk of overwhelming the network with transaction data is reduced. The transition to QUIC is happening gradually. Many validator and RPC nodes on the Mainnet-beta network have already been upgraded. Solana's upcoming software release 1.13.4 aims to make QUIC the default protocol for all transactions, completing the transition away from UDP.
Beyond adopting QUIC, Solana developers have rolled out another innovation to further improve the core performance of the network - a staking-weighted transaction prioritization engine.This new system gives priority to transactions from accounts that have staked more SOL tokens, ensuring that network bandwidth is allocated proportionally based on each user's staked holdings. Accounts with larger SOL stakes and more "skin in the game" will see their transactions confirmed faster than those with smaller stakes.
Staking and Fees
The staking-weighted model aligns with Solana's reliance on proof-of-stake for consensus and network security. Those who hold more SOL inherently have a bigger incentive to secure the network. Prioritizing their transactions is both logical and beneficial for maintaining the loyalty of large stakeholders.
Looking ahead, Solana is working on flexible transaction fee markets. Users will be able to bid higher fees to prioritize transactions during times of congestion. Fees will be based on the expected computation resources required for each transaction.The goal is to allow users to pay extra when they need faster execution, while better optimizing overall network capacity usage. Fee market support is already active on the Mainnet-beta test network, with integration into wallets and APIs still in progress.
Together, these changes modernize Solana's networking stack, improve reliability, add stake-weighted fairness, and lay the groundwork for advanced fee market functionality. Solana continues to evolve its industry-leading performance and capabilities.
